Mohammad Hejazi, 7 years old, will never forget the last time he played with his friends with both eyes. Today, when he looks in the mirror, he sees himself with only one eye. He remembers the moment when an Israeli bomb exploded, leaving him without his sight and in tears.
On March 25th, Mohammad was playing near his home, which is located close to Kamal Odwan Hospital in northern Gaza. A piece of shrapnel struck him, with the largest fragment still lodged in his eye.
He was a ball of energy and never stopped moving. Mohammad spent his time playing with his friends. Now, he is a regular at the hospital with his mother, looking for treatment that might restore his vision. His mother says he became desperate, and I hope a smile returns on his face.
Mohammad's mother described the bombing, saying: "It was a strange, round piece of metal. He touched it, and it went off in his face. The blast shook the area, we and our Neighbors rushed to see what had happened, we were shocked to find Mohammad in this condition."
His father continued: "We rushed Mohammad to Al Oyun Hospital in the Al Nasr neighborhood. His injury was severe, and he had to undergo surgery. The doctors had to remove his right eye."
He recalled the events in detail, adding: "When we arrived at the hospital, his face was completely covered in blood. The doctors informed me that his left eye was also injured, and they told me we needed to take him abroad for treatment as soon as possible, or the eye could begin to atrophy, and he would undergo surgery to remove it.
For this moment, Mohammed was waiting for any chance to save what remained of his sight despite his injury "in a hard moment for my heart when Mohammed asked me when my eyes would see the light again."
Mohammad was always moving and full of energy, but now he spends all his time in bed, and his eyes are closed because he doesn't see anything.
His father said painfully," All we required was transferring him abroad to find his treatment."
When the northern people return home, which is located in town and areas north of the valley, the story of children injured by suspicious objects that Israeli occupation put hundreds of them into the rubble, and their playing with them without knowing and understanding anything about it was discovered in a new war.
The father, trying to brush away his tears, completed:" Save the children of Gaza, I want my son to live in safety and return his sight, while he has one eye."
